WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--U.S. farmers are expected to plant 1.57
million acres in 14 states to sugarbeets, 1% above the previous
year's plantings, the U.S. Agriculture Department said Friday in
its annual "Prospective Plantings" report.
Idaho, Wyoming and Minnesota are expected to see the largest
increases in plantings, while acreage will fall in Oregon,
Michigan and Ohio, the USDA said.
Minnesota producers intend to plant 490,000 acres of sugarbeets
in 2000-01, up 10,000 acres from the previous year, the USDA said.
Wyoming producers intend to plant 62,000 acres to sugarbeets,
up 4,000 acres from the previous year, the USDA said.
Ohio sugarbeet area is expected to fall 600 acres from the
previous year to 1,200 acres. Michigan producers intend to plant
191,000 acres, a 3,000-acre decrease from the previous year, the
USDA said.
