Sugar beet growers explore buyout of Western Sugar

August 7, 2000

UNDATED - Sugar beet growers are exploring a buyout of Western Sugar Company, but they’re concerned about taking on new debt.

Wyoming grower David Northrup says growers are also concerned about the oversupply of sugar, and the shakiness of the federal sugar-beet support program. A growers’ cooperative has been formed, to explore the possibility of buying the six Western Sugar refineries, including the one in Billings. Growers have until Saturday, to respond to a request for money to study the idea.
