As the 2000 campaign enters the final days of completion, sugar beet officials are looking forward to the 2001 planting season. Kent Wimmer, director of Agriculture for Western Sugar, said the Bayard factory finished processing beets at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Scottsbluff is projected to finish its campaign on Feb. 1. "There are still some sugar beets in the Cedar Canyon, Holyoke and Sedgwick receiving stations that are being hauled to the factory.

Wimmer said Ft. Morgan and Greeley should finish their campaigns on Feb. 2, Billings, Mont., is projected to finish on Feb. 21 or 22 and Lovell, Wyo. on Feb. 24 or 25.

Wimmer said the first 10 days in January were unseasonably warm and caused some rimming in the sugar beet piles in the Scottsbluff area.

The exterior beets were deteriorating due to the warm weather causing some coloring problems during processing.

Wimmer said contracting for the 2001 contract hasn't started although they have a master contract in place.

"With the cooperative activities, we think its a little premature to start contracting," Wimmer explained.

He added that as soon as the cooperative makes their deadlines, contracting will begin in a timely fashion.
