The first MonDak Pulse Day is Feb. 21 at the Williston Research Extension Center.

Researchers and extension personnel from Montana State University and North Dakota State University and representatives from grower groups and private industry will discuss all aspects of raising chickpeas, dry peas and lentils in the MonDak region.

The morning talks will be: Profitable Crop Rotations with Legumes by Perry Miller, assistant professor of cropping systems land resources and environmental sciences at MSU; Systems Approach to Handling Ascochyta by Kent McKay, area extension specialist at the NDSU North Central Research Extension Center); and Other Diseases and Seed Treatments by Jack Reisselman, extension plant pathology specialist at MSU.

During lunch, representatives from the North Dakota Dry Pea and Lentil Association, the North Dakota Dry Pea and Lentil Council and the Montana Pulse Growers will give updates on their activities. A $5 charge will cover noon lunch and coffee during breaks.

Afternoon talks will include: Fertility and Inoculate Management by Miller; Weed Control Strategies in Pulse Crop by Brian Jenks, assistant station specialist at the NDSU North Central Research Extension Center; Annual Legumes for Forages and Grazing by Dennis Cash, extension agronomy specialist; The WREC Annual Legume Study by Jim Staricka, associate soil scientist at NDSU Williston Research Extension Center; and Managing Quality for Big Bucks by Jerome Knudson of Superior Grains in Crosby.

The afternoon will end with a grower panel discussion. Panel members will include several area growers who have experience growing pulse crops and a few of the earlier speakers. Each grower will give a short talk on his operation. Discussion will then be opened to the audience.
