CHEYENNE Cooler weather and light rain were welcome news
last week, but not enough to alleviate concerns about crop
quality, according to the Wyoming Agricultural Statistics
Service.
Topsoil moisture was 21 percentage points below the
five-year average, with adequate or surplus moisture was
reported in 55 percent of the state, agricultural officials
said.
Farmers seeded about a third of their barley crops, 4
percent of their spring wheat and 3 percent of sugar beets.
All of those figures were under average for this time of year.
Calving meanwhile, was slightly ahead of the five-year
average, officials said.
Range and pasture growth were mostly poor and fair. Hay
continued to be scarce, with more than 80 percent of the state
short or very short on roughage supplies, officials said. |
