SIDNEY (AP) Seeding for sugar beets has started, according to Holly Sugar Refinery officials.

Russ Fullmer, agricultural manager at the refinery here, said despite financial difficulties, Holly Sugar intends to operate normally at most of its plants throughout the West. The parent company of Holly Sugar Imperial Sugar filed a bankruptcy restructuring plan on Jan. 16.

Once the company gets through its Chapter 11 restructuring, we expect some of the bond holders will be paid in stock, Fullmer said. Then there will be a different group of shareholders and a different board of directors.

Fullmer said the Sidney factory expects to be on par with last years production. The weather so far has been somewhat cool for planting, he said, particularly in the north of the growing territory.

Were going to be off to a little late start, Fullmer said. Everybodys keeping an eye on the weather.

While it is still too early to tell, Fullmer said the winter weather may give growers some relief from the pests and diseases that target beets.
