The Holly Sugar Agricultural Department announces the scheduling of
important events leading up to the 2001 sugarbeet harvest.
The annual Growers Night and pre-harvest meeting was Thursday. The
agricultural staff shared all the latest information regarding the
upcoming harvest with area beet growers. Receiving station locations and
hours were reviewed along with other necessary information that will help
insure a smooth harvest.
Tare Lab Night is Sept. 13 at the Holly Sugar factory. Growers will
bring samples from their fields that will be tested for sugar content at
the factory tare laboratory beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be
refreshments.
Area beet growers can bring samples at that time, but if that proves to
be inconvenient, Holly Sugar will still run samples for growers. Contact a
Holly Sugar agriculturalist and they'll pick up your sample, or you can
make arrangements to bring it in.
Farmers can pick up tare bags and field information tags at the factory
or use their own bags and bring along pertinent information. Samples
should be 30-40 pounds. If a grower wants a tonnage estimate, the grower
must dig out 10 feet of one row of beets and bring that sample to the
factory.
This is an opportunity for growers to get an indication of the success
of their crop and the information they gather can help growers determine
which fields to harvest first.
While farmers await results of the tests, they can visit with Holly
Sugar Technical Services Manager Dave Cummings and other factory personnel.
For Holly Sugar, it is a chance to train tare lab workers and gear up
for the harvest campaign. Early beet harvest begins Sept. 17 with slice at
the factory beginning Sept. 18. Regular harvest will start Oct. 1.
