Youve surely heard of spotted knapweed, but can you pick it out of a line-up? How about field bindweed? Would you recognize this creeping enemy on your property?

Dont fear if you dont know your noxious weeds. A new book from the Montana State University Extension Service and Montana Department of Agriculture can help.

Montanas Noxious Weeds is an identification guide to Montanas 23 most dangerous weeds, including whitetop, leafy spurge and the knapweeds. Color photos depict flowers, stems, leaves and other identifying characteristics of the plants. The book was written by Roger Sheley, MSU Extensions noxious weeds, specialist, and Monica Pokorny, graduate research assistant.

Noxious weeds are considered dangerous rather than pretty wildflowers because they are taking over land from native plants and are not useful for wildlife or livestock.

Through a grant from the Montana Department of Agriculture, a limited number of single copies will be available at no charge. Additional books, as well as those for people out-of-state and groups who need them in bulk, will be available for $2 each plus postage.

To obtain Montanas Noxious Weeds, Visit your local county MSU Extension office, where a limited supply is available, or contact MSU Extension Publications, PO Box 172040, Bozeman, MT 59717,(406) 994-3273 or tbiggs@montana.cdu. Ask for EB159
