Administration backs U.S. sugar in NAFTA dispute

WASHINGTON -- Idaho Senator Larry Craig met this week with U.S. Trade Representative Bob Zoellick and Special Agriculture Trade Negotiator Allen Johnson to discuss trade agreements affecting the sugar industry. Craig said the administration is ready and willing to enforce and uphold the side letter to North American Free Trade Agreement, which Mexico is currently disputing. That side agreement, or "letter" to NAFTA, prevents large quantities of subsidized sugar from being imported from Mexico.
"I am pleased the Administration is committed to upholding the trade agreements that are critical to protecting our sugar producers. The Senate Sugar Caucus and USTR will continue to work closely as the U.S. moves forward on trade negotiations with Mexico," Craig said
Senators Craig and John Breaux (D-LA) are co-chairmen of the Senate Sugar Caucus, which works on sugar-related issues with industry representatives, legislators and the administration
