Controlling Noxious Weeds

Noxious weeds are defined as any exotic plant species established or
that maybe introduced into the state which may render land unfit for
agriculture, forestry, livestock, wildlife or other beneficial uses or
that may harm native plant communities. Noxious weeds are reducing the
economic productivity and ecological integrity of our lands and waters.
Introduction and spread of noxious weeds has increased dramatically over
the past 150 years. Cost-share programs are offered in some counties for
specific weed species. Currently, the Richland County Weed District
provides chemical to fight Leafy Spurge at a reduced rate as incentive to
help landowners control weeds. In 2001 over $11,000 was given out in cost
share dollars. This targets a specific weed species but financial
resources are inadequate to assist private landowners with total weed
management. The Richland County Conservation District, the Richland County
Weed District, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, MSU Extension
Service and the Farm Service Agency County Office Committee met recently
to discuss fighting noxious weeds in our county. Preventing weed invasion
is the most economical management strategy. Preventive education is a
cost-effective method of battling noxious weeds. The public at large,
youth, government, recreationists and construction along with agricultural
producers need to be educated about the spread of weeds, identification
and how to control them. To help with this education the Weed District,
Conservation District, NRCS and FSA plan to run ads in local papers to
remind landowners it is their responsibility to control noxious weeds on
their property and when it is the best times to spray specific weeds. A
small infestation is easier to control chemically and financially. If you
have noxious weeds on your property, please do your part to control them.
Now until the first killing frost is the time to spray Canada Thistle,
Field Bindweed and Leafy Spurge. If you have any questions about noxious
weeds contact the Richland County Weed District at 433-9047 or Red Lovec,
MSU Extension Agent at 433-1206. |
