Sugarcane Market Expands |

Brazil, Oct 8, 2001 (Gazeta
Mercantil/SABI via COMTEX) -- 15 major sugarcane and alcohol mills from
the Brazilian South region have 40% stake of the domestic market, with the
process of 81.5mil m tons sugarcane in 2000/2001 crop. During the period,
the sector processed 207mil m tons of sugarcane. In 90s the region
represented 31,5% stake, with the processing of 55.4mil m tons, while
Brazilian overall processing reached 176.3mil m tons. According to the
report presented by JOB Economia e Planejamento it happened due to the
mergers and acquisitions occured in the sector. Until 2005 the region will
account for 60% of the Brazilian sugarcane production informed JOB. Major
player in the region is Cosan. Recently the company has acquired Univalem
and Santo Antonio, both at Sao Paulo state, in partnership with Union SDA
and Sueden, which teams FBA (Franco Brasileira Acucar e Alcool). Cosan
exports 1.2mil m tons of sugar. |
