The Federal Government has all but ruled out an extension to the $83
million assistance package for sugar cane growers.
The package designed to help struggling farmers is due to wind up on
December 31st.
But the head of the Coalition's Sugar Industry Task Force, De-anne
Kelly, says the Government should extend household support payments
because of proposed increases in American farm subsidies.
However, a spokesperson for Agriculture Minister Warren Truss, says it's
unlikely the request will be met because there doesn't appear to be a
case for it.
