HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Potential Health Effects
CAUTION! May irritate eyes, nose, throat, and skin. May be harmful if
absorbed through skin, inhaled, or swallowed.
ANIMAL DATA:
Acute Oral: LD50 > 5,000 mg/kg body wt. Very low toxicity by ingestion.
Acute Dermal (rabbits): LD50 > 2,000 mg/kg. Slightly toxic by contact.
Irritation: Not a primary skin irritant in test on rabbits.
Eye: Produced mild to severe corneal opacity in rabbit eye tests. Eyes were
normal within 7 days.
CHRONIC STUDIES: MANCOZEB
Inhalation: The effects in animals from repeated high doses of mancozeb
(dust) equivalent to 150-250 times the AEL include reduced body weight,
inflammation of the lungs, and abnormal thyroid function.
Ingestion: Toxic effects in animals from repeated ingestion of high doses
include reduced body weight and thyroid effects.
Increased incidences of thyroid tumors and ocular lesions (retinopathy)
were observed in rats administered 750 ppm (equivalent to approximately
35 mg/kg/day) of mancozeb in their diet for two years. This compound is
considered to show weak carcinogenic activity. Tests in some animals
indicate that the compound may produce embryo and fetal toxicity, but only
at maternally toxic doses. Multigeneration studies in animals demonstrate
no reproductive toxicity.
Although there have been isolated reports in the scientific literature of
mutagenic activity of mancozeb, in general mancozeb is not genotoxic in
animals or in cell cultures. Mancozeb has not been tested for heritable
gene mutation.
Ethylenethiourea (ETU), a breakdown product and a minor metabolite of
mancozeb, was shown to induce liver tumors in mice but not in rats or
hamsters, and caused thyroid tumors in rats. ETU is not genotoxic. ETU has
been categorized as a probable human carcinogen by IARC and as group B
carcinogen by NTP. At sufficiently high doses ETU has also caused birth
defects in laboratory animals.
HUMAN HEALTH EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE TO MANCOZEB: Overexposure to mancozeb
by skin contact may initially include skin irritation with discomfort or
rash. The compound has been infrequently associated with skin sensitization
in humans. Significant skin permeation and systemic toxicity after contact
appears unlikely.
Eye contact may initially include eye irritation with discomfort, tearing,
or blurring of vision.
Based on animal studies, long-term exposure to high levels of mancozeb may
cause abnormal thyroid function.
Individuals with preexisting diseases of the thyroid may have increased
susceptibility to the toxicity of excessive exposures.
California (Proposition 65): This product contains mancozeb and ethylene
thiourea, chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth
defects, or other reproductive harm.
Carcinogenicity Information: None of the components present in this
material at concentrations equal to or greater than 0.1% are listed by
IARC, NTP, OSHA, or ACGIH as a carcinogen.

FIRST AID MEASURES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
First Aid
INHALATION: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give
artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Call a
physician.
SKIN CONTACT: In case of contact, immediately wash skin with soap and
water. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
EYE CONTACT: In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of
water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician.
INGESTION: If swallowed, immediately give 2 glasses of water and induce
vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Call a
physician.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flammable Properties
Flammable limits in Air, % by Volume:
LEL: 0.96 g/L
Autoignition: 205C (401F)
May be ignited by heat or open flame. Like most organic powders or
crystals, under severe dusting conditions, this material may form explosive
mixtures in air. Hazardous gases/vapors produced in fire are H2S, CS2, and
oxides of sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon.
Extinguishing Media: Water spray, foam, dry chemical, CO2.
Fire Fighting Instructions: Keep personnel removed and upwind of fire.
Wear self-contained breathing apparatus. Use water spray. Runoff from fire
control may be a pollution hazard.
If area is heavily exposed to fire and if conditions permit, let fire burn
itself out since water may increase the contamination hazard.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Safeguards (Personnel): NOTE: Review FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES and HANDLING
(PERSONNEL) sections before proceeding with cleanup. Use appropriate
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT during cleanup.
Initial Containment: Remove source of heat, sparks, flame, impact,
friction, or electricity. Dike spill. Prevent material from entering
sewers, waterways, or low areas.
Spill Cleanup: Shovel or sweep up. Never return to container for reuse.
Scoop into bags or boxes with plastic or aluminum shovel.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
HANDLING AND STORAGE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Handling (Personnel): Avoid breathing vapors or mist. Avoid breathing dust.
Avoid contact with eyes, skin, or clothing. Do not store or consume food,
drink, or tobacco in areas where they may become contaminated with this
material.
Users Should: Wash hands before eating, drinking, chewing gum, using
tobacco, or using the toilet. Remove personal protective equipment
immediately after handling this product. Wash the outside of gloves before
removing. As soon as possible, wash thoroughly and change into clean
clothing.
Handling (Physical Aspects): Avoid dust generation.
Storage: Store in a well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed.
Do not store or consume food, drink, or tobacco in areas where they may
become contaminated with this material.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Engineering Controls: Use only with adequate ventilation.
Personal Protective Equipment: Always follow label instructions when using
this product.
Applicators and other handlers (other than mixers and loaders) must wear:
Coveralls over long-sleeved shirt and pants
Waterproof gloves
Shoes plus socks
Mixers and Loaders must wear:
Coveralls over long-sleeved shirt and long pants
Waterproof gloves
Shoes plus socks
Protective eyewear
Chemical-resistant apron when mixing or loading
Discard clothing or other absorbent materials that have been drenched or
heavily contaminated with this product's concentrate. Do not reuse them.
Follow manufacturer's instructions for cleaning/maintaining PPE. If no such
instructions for washables, use detergent and hot water. Keep and wash PPE
separately from other laundry.
PPE required for early entry to treated areas that is permitted under the
Worker Protection Standard and that involves contact with anything that has
been treated, such as plants, soil, or water, is:
Coveralls over long-sleeved shirt and long pants
Waterproof gloves
Shoes plus socks
Exposure Guidelines
Applicable Exposure Limits
