ENVIRONMENTAL AND DISPOSAL INFORMATION --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENVIRONMENTAL DATA: This pesticide is toxic to fish. For terrestrial uses, do not apply directly to water, or to areas where surface water is present or to intertidal areas below the mean high water mark. Drift or runoff from treatment areas may be hazardous to aquatic organisms in neighboring aquatic sites. Do not contaminate water when disposing of equipment washwaters or rinsate. ACTION TO TAKE FOR SPILLS: Use absorbent materials to contain and clean up small spills and dispose as waste. Large spills report to CHEMTREC and DowElanco for assistance. Prohibit use of hot or sparking equipment in immediate area. Prevent runoff. DISPOSAL METHOD: Do not contaminate water, food or feed by storage or disposal. Waste resulting from formulation of this product may be disposed of on site or at an approved waste disposal facility. Follow all local, state, and Federal requirements for disposal. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. HEALTH HAZARD DATA --------------------------------------------------------------------------- EYE: May cause moderate irritation with corneal injury; in test animals, effects healed in 1-14 days. Solvent vapors may irritate eyes. SKIN CONTACT: Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause skin irritation, even a burn. May cause allergic skin reaction in susceptible individuals. Solvent may cause drying or flaking of skin. SKIN ABSORPTION: A single prolonged exposure is not likely to result in the material being absorbed through skin in harmful amounts. The LD50 for skin absorption in rabbits is >2000 mg/kg. INGESTION: Single dose oral toxicity is low. The oral LD50 for rats is greater than 2900 mg/kg. Small amounts swallowed incidental to normal handling operations are not likely to cause injury; swallowing amounts larger than that may cause injury. If aspirated (liquid enters the lung), may cause lung damage or even death due to chemical pneumonia. INHALATION: Based on data obtained on solvent, excessive vapor concentrations (of solvent components) are attainable and could be hazardous on single exposure; excessive exposure may cause irritation of the eyes, upper respiratory tract, and lungs. Signs and symptoms of excessive exposure may be central nervous system effects. SYSTEMIC (OTHER TARGET ORGAN) EFFECTS: Excessive exposure may cause liver, kidney, lung and blood effects. Xylene is reported to have caused hearing loss in laboratory animals upon exposure to high concentrations; such effects have not been reported in humans. One component (naphthalene) has been associated with cataracts and other eye effects from vapors or dust. CANCER INFORMATION: Solvent did not cause cancer in long-term animal studies. Xylene in solvent was not found to be carcinogenic in a National Toxicology Program bioassay in rats and mice. The active ingredient (trifluralin) was associated with a low incidence of urinary tract tumors in one strain of rat in 1 of 5 chronic (2 yr) studies conducted, and is not anticipated to be a carcinogenic risk to man. May contain a small amount of naphthalene, which has caused cancer in some laboratory animals. TERATOLOGY (BIRTH DEFECTS): Solvent contains a small amount of ethylbenzene which has caused birth defects in laboratory animals. Exaggerated doses of xylene (in solvent) given orally to pregnant mice resulted in an increase in cleft palate, a common developmental abnormality in mice. Inhalation exposure to xylene of pregnant animals resulted in toxicity to the fetus but did not cause any birth defects. REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS: Data on ethylbenzene (a minor solvent component) are inadequate to determine effects on reproduction. Other tested components did not interfere with reproduction in animal studies. MUTAGENICITY (EFFECTS ON GENETIC MATERIAL): Mutagenicity testing with trifluralin has been negative in most in-vivo and in-vitro systems. Positive results in a Drosophila m. study are contradicted by results in in-vivo mammalian test systems. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. FIRST AID --------------------------------------------------------------------------- EYES: Hold eyelids open and flush with a steady, gentle stream of water for 15 minutes. See an opthalmologist or physician immediately. SKIN: Immediately wash with plenty of soap and water. Get medical attention if irritation develops. INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting. Contains an aromatic hydrocarbon and can be extremely harmful if swallowed. Call a physician or poison control center. If available, administer activated charcoal (6 to 8 heaping teaspoonfuls) with a large quantity of water. Do not induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Immediately transport to a medical care facility and see a physician. INHALATION: Remove individual to fresh air. Get medical attention if breathing difficulty occurs. If not breathing, provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation assistance (mouth-to-mouth) and call a physician. NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: This product contains an aromatic hydrocarbon and can be extremely harmful if swallowed. Aspiration of this product may produce a severe pneumonitis. Stomach lavage with a cuffed endotracheal tube in place and immediate administration of activated charcoal, 6-8 heaping teaspoonfuls with water, should be considered. Treatment is otherwise symptomatic and supportive. MEDICAL CONDITIONS GENERALLY AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: No corroborative information is available that would establish the aggravation of a medical condition by exposure to TREFLAN; however, it is a reasonable assumption that highly allergic individuals would be at a somewhat greater risk for demonstrating an allergic reaction when exposed. Additionally, the xylene content of TREFLAN E.C. could be a source of irritation for individuals with sensitive skin. Inhalation of vapors could aggravate an underlying lung or heart disorder. Effects of alcohol consumption may be increased by significant exposure to xylene. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS --------------------------------------------------------------------------- EXPOSURE GUIDELINES: Xylene: ACGIH TLV and OSHA PEL are 100 ppm TWA, 150 PPM STEL. Ethylbenzene: ACGIH TLV and OSHA PEL are 100 ppm TWA, 125 ppm STEL. Naphthalene: ACGIH TLV and OSHA PEL are 10 ppm TWA, 15 ppm STEL. PELs are in accord with those recommended by OSHA, as in the 1989 revision of PELs. VENTILATION: Provide general and/or local exhaust ventilation to control airborne levels below the exposure guidelines. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Atmospheric levels should be maintained below the exposure guidelines. When respiratory protection is necessary, use an approved air-purifying or positive-pressure supplied air respirator depending on the potential airborne concentration. For emergency and other conditions where exposure guidelines may be greatly exceeded, use an approved positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus or positive-pressure airline with auxiliary self-contained air supply. In confined or poorly ventilated areas, use an approved positive-pressure supplied-air respirator. SKIN PROTECTION: For handling prior to end-use of this product, use protective clothing impervious to this material when prolonged or frequently-repeated contact could occur. Selection of specific items such as faceshield, gloves, boots, apron, or full-body suit will depend on operation.
